The mid and the late seventies observed remarkable advancement in the computer technology and the scope of its applications widened to such a degree that it seemed prevalent in almost every field of life from extensive scientific research to simple preparation of house-hold budget. Assessing the importance of this technology, the university authorities took a timely step in the right direction. As a result, an institute was started in the name of "COMPUTER STUDIES CENTER" in 1983. Initially the center embarked on basic training in computer languages. The only asset of the center was two micro-computer and a printer. Every other thing including the furniture and the space was borrowed from other departments.

The center was the driving force behind the designing of the BSc syllabus for computer science in 1984, and its subsequent implementation in eh constituent colleges by rendering teaching services. In 1985, the center was upgraded to the status of the full fledged department thus enabling it to launch MSc program. In 1986, the department got its own building which had relatively more space. In 1998, the department succeeded in approving the commencement of the BCS program and in acquiring a bigger place, which has almost double accommodation.

   Then as the requirements of the world and specially Pakistan changes so there arise a need of more advancement in this regard so the department start its first session of BIT in 2001 which is accompanied by both computer science and management. So now the department is one of the best institutions of N.W.F.P.
